NTPC, which is India's biggest power company and a government-owned Maharatna firm, has just announced a big job opening for young engineers in 2026. They are hiring Engineering Executive Trainees (often called EETs or Executive Trainees). In total, there are 515 posts available. This is a great chance for engineering graduates to start a solid career in the power sector with good pay, job security, and lots of growth opportunities.
What is this job all about?
NTPC produces a huge part of India's electricity, mostly from thermal power plants, but also from other sources. As an Executive Trainee, you start as a trainee and get trained for about one year. After that, you become a regular executive (in ) and work on important projects like running power stations, planning new plants, maintenance, or using new technologies in energy. This role is perfect for fresh graduates who want stable government-style jobs in a PSU (Public Sector Undertaking). Many people dream of working in NTPC because it offers respect, good perks, and chances to move up to high positions over time.
Who can apply? (Eligibility rules made simple)
To be eligible, you need to meet these basic requirements:- Education: You must have a full-time B.E. or B.Tech degree (or equivalent like B.Sc Engineering) in one of these branches:
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electronics Engineering
- Instrumentation Engineering
- Computer Science / Information Technology
- Civil Engineering (mentioned in some updates)
- Or related fields like Mining in certain cases
You need to have passed from a recognized university or college. The marks required are usually good (like first division or equivalent), but relaxations apply for SC/ST/PwD categories as per government rules.
GATE Score: You must have a valid GATE 2025 score in the matching paper (for example, GATE in Electrical for Electrical posts). This is the main way they shortlist people—no separate written test.
Final year students: If you're in your last year of engineering right now, you can still apply. But you have to show proof that you passed before you actually join the job.
Age: For general category, your age should not be more than 27 years as on the last date to apply (25 February 2026). That means you should be born on or after 26 February 1999 (roughly).
There is relaxation for reserved categories:
- OBC: usually +3 years
- SC/ST: +5 years
- PwD: extra as per rules
Check the official notification for exact details because relaxations can vary.
How will they select candidates?
The process is straightforward and mostly based on your performance in GATE:1. Shortlisting: They look at your GATE 2025 scores and pick the top candidates for each branch. A higher score means a better chance.
2. Next rounds: Depending on the year and number of applicants, they may call shortlisted people for:
- Group Discussion (GD)
- Personal Interview
- Or sometimes aptitude/behavioral tests
In many past cycles, it's mainly an interview after the GATE shortlist.
3. Medical check: After clearing the above, you go through a medical exam to make sure you're fit for the job.
Only those who pass all stages get the final offer.
Salary and other benefits
Once selected, you join in E1 grade. The basic pay scale is ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000 per month. That's the starting range, but with dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), perks, and other benefits, your in-hand salary can be quite good even at the start.Other advantages include:
- Free or low-cost accommodation (or HRA)
- Medical facilities for you and family
- Leave travel concession
- Provident fund, gratuity
- Performance incentives
- Training with stipend during the trainee period
- Job security (permanent after training)
- Chance to work across India in power plants, offices, or projects
For fresh engineers, this is one of the best-paying and most respected entry-level PSU jobs.
